How To Volunteer as a Science Olympiad Mentor Advisor

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

FAQ's

This is a rewarding opportunity to serve as a sounding board, help trouble-shoot, or work on building events with high school students who are passionate about science in preparation for the March 23rd Science Olympiad competition.

How do I sign up?
Click on the "Register" button above to get started.  Or you can always just call us to register: 617-349-6794.

What is the time commitment?
The volunteer commitment is for one weekly 60-90 minute session. Science Olympiad volunteers meet with 2 students at the school for 1.5 hours per week in the afternoon, between 2:30 and 5:00, Monday - Friday.  You will arrange your schedule with the students.  Resources are available on site that include practice tests, event descriptions, and computers.  Volunteers may choose to assist on additional days and times.  The competition takes place March 23, 2013.

Who are the students?
Our public schools have a very diverse student body. Students involved with Science Olympiad are there because they want to be.

Can I help if I’ve never worked in a school?
Yes! You do not have to have prior experience as a tutor or teacher. We will work to match your talents with a need in the schools.

What will happen at the kickoff?
This kickoff orientation will include information about Science Olympiad, an introduction to the teacher coaches, and a chance to get to know the students and other volunteers. Refreshments will be served.

Where do the CSV orientations take place?
The kickoff will take place in the "Fiction Room" of the school library inside Cambridge Rindge & Latin School (CRLS).  Click here for directions.

What are this year's Science Olympiad events?
Each volunteer advises 1-2 students who are preparing for a particular event.  The events are listed here

Do I need to provide references or have a CORI check?
Yes. You can download the High School Reference Form and bring two copies with you to your orientation. Your references should be individuals who have known you for at least one year. Also, bring a government-issued photo ID (drivers license or passport) for a CORI (criminal record) check.
